Good morning!
Both the House and the Senate have passed their versions of the budget. The
next step is for the House and the Senate leadership to agree on how much
money to put in each category ( ex. Education, Health, etc.) Next will be
the setting of the conference schedule. Representatives from the House and the
Senate will be selected to sit on a conference committee and attempt to come to
agreement on their assigned category of the budget. This happens over several
short meetings where each side brings forward offers, which are accepted or
rejected. Any items which are not resolved are kicked up to the Appropriations
chairs and then the leadership of the House and Senate. There is a 72
hours cooling off period before the agreed upon budget is then sent back to the
House and Senate for a floor vote. This must be completed prior to the end of
the day March 11th. Passing a budget is the ONLY action
required of the Legislature.
